PRESS AUTHOR WINS NATIONAL LANGUAGE AWARD Veronica has been working to maintain and promote Arrernte language since 1982. She has been involved in language maintenance work as a teacher, educator, linguist, researcher and author, as well as a translator and interpreter. Among her credits are work on two Arrernte curricula: Intelyape-lyape and the Arrernte Curriculum for Year 7 and Year 8. These include information for teachers on learning outcomes and assessment, cultural aims, grammar and pronunciation. This initiative has been groundbreaking in bringing Indigenous language to mainstream schools. Veronica co-compiled the Eastern and Central Arrernte Dictionary published by IAD Press - the most sophisticated Aboriginal language dictionary yet produced. The dictionary represents by far the most comprehensive compilation of Arandic vocabulary that has been published in the 120 year history of recording Arandic languages. IAD Press Publisher Josie Douglas said: “This award is well-deserved. Veronica has been at the forefront of preserving and promoting Arrernte language and culture. Her work has added greatly to the knowledge of Arrernte language and culture and will ensure that there are language resources available for future generations. “ Veronica’s latest work, Arrernte Bush Medicines, is in production with IAD Press. Arrernte Bush Medicines documents the use of plants and other natural products for medicinal purposes by Arrernte people. For more information, please contact Kirsty Nancarrow on 0889511379. |
