IAD Press recognised in International book prize for Wenten Rubuntja biography
25 June 2004 The book, published in 2003 and written by Wenten Rubuntja in collaboration with linguist Jenny Green has been listed as a ‘Notable Book’ in the nonfiction category of the awards. There were 403 entries in the 2004 Prize, which promotes books that contribute to a greater understanding and cooperation among the peoples and nations of the Pacific Rim and South Asia. ‘The Town Grew Up Dancing’ is the life story of Wenten Rubuntja — Aboriginal statesman and artist. Wenten has been at the forefront of the land rights movement, the protection of Aboriginal sacred sites in the Northern Territory and the formation of key Aboriginal organisations in Alice Springs over the past 30 years. Wenten is also a highly acclaimed artist, inspired by his uncle, Albert Namatjira. Wenten’s paintings in Namatjira’s watercolour landscape style and the acrylic or 'Western Desert' style that began at Papunya in 1971 feature in the book along with Wenten’s commentary, telling stories that are inspired by his country. ‘The Town Grew Up Dancing’ is written in both a biographical and autobiographical style. Wenten’s narrative — told both in Arrernte (with translations) and in Aboriginal English — forms the core of the book, with linking text providing context and supporting historical background. Publisher Josie Douglas said: “IAD Press is thrilled that one of our titles has been noted in this prestigious international literary prize. We are among a select few of Australian publishers to be acknowledged in the list, which is dominated by publishers in the USA.” For more information, contact Kirsty Nancarrow on 088951 1379 or visit these websites: www.kiriyamaprize.org/notable/2004 www.iad.edu.au/press
