History

The Institute for Aboriginal Development Incorporated (IAD) was established by the Uniting Church in 1969 to assist community development for Aboriginal people and  provide cross-cultural education between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal society. It is now an independent Aboriginal community-controlled language resource centre and adult education centre serving the Aboriginal community of Central Australia.

 

General Activities

General IAD activities include:

  • education programs which range from literacy and numeracy to vocational and higher education level courses;

  • an Aboriginal language and culture centre specialising  in language cross-culture and cultural maintenance programs, as well as providing interpreter services and language research

  • a publishing arm, IAD Press, which produces material on the Aboriginal people, language and culture of Central Australia.

Aims

The aims of the Institute are to:

  • help Aboriginal people to develop the knowledge and skills required to cope with cross-cultural situations.

  • devise and carry out educational and other programs related to the needs and aspirations of Aboriginal people.

  • promote cross-cultural understanding through specific programs for non-Aboriginal people.

  • maximise involvement by Aboriginal people in the control and management of the affairs of the Institute and in the way in which they are conducted.

  • promote the research and understanding of Central Australian languages.

  • Community education

  • Vocational education and training

  • Workplace training

  • Language maintenance programs

  • Cross-cultural programs

  • Cultural maintenance programs

  • Interpreter services

  • Language research

IAD VISION / MISSION STATEMENT

STRATEGIC INTENT

It is the intent of the Institute for Aboriginal Development to be the leader in development of Indigenous intraprises, micro-businesses. IAD Press is an established intraprise unit and it is IAD’s strategic intent is  to develop its other functions and facilities  as education and training sites for small business operations. All intraprises will be Indigenous worksites where staff and students  will participate in foundation work readiness programs with a focus on  Indigenous culture and languages  VET programs,  spiritual, social and emotional wellbeing  Intraprise teams who succeed in championing an intraprise though to the approval stage end up being charges with the lead role in heading up new intraprise.

PROPOSITION

Aboriginal culture is an integral component of a person’s social, and emotional wellbeing,  learning,  job development  and work environments.

OUR MISSION

To assist Aboriginal people in their social and  emotional wellbeing and job development through the provision of education and training programs, specialist language education resources and cultural materials and the preservation of Aboriginal histories and stories.
