About IAD

                                  

History

The Institute for Aboriginal Development Incorporated (IAD) was established by the Uniting Church in 1969 to assist community development for Aboriginal people and  provide cross-cultural education between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal society. It is now an independent Aboriginal community-controlled language resource centre and adult education centre serving the Aboriginal community of Central Australia.

 

General Activities

General IAD activities include:

  • education programs which range from literacy and numeracy to vocational and higher education level courses;

  • an Aboriginal language and culture centre specialising  in language cross-culture and cultural maintenance programs, as well as providing interpreter services and language research

  • a publishing arm, IAD Press, which produces material on the Aboriginal people, language and culture of Central Australia.

Aims

The aims of the Institute are to:

  • help Aboriginal people to develop the knowledge and skills required to cope with cross-cultural situations.

  • devise and carry out educational and other programs related to the needs and aspirations of Aboriginal people.

  • promote cross-cultural understanding through specific programs for non-Aboriginal people.

  • maximise involvement by Aboriginal people in the control and management of the affairs of the Institute and in the way in which they are conducted.

  • promote the research and understanding of Central Australian languages.

  • Community education

  • Vocational education and training

  • Workplace training

  • Language maintenance programs

  • Cross-cultural programs

  • Cultural maintenance programs

  • Interpreter services

  • Language research

STRATEGIC INTENT
It is the intent of the Institute for Aboriginal Development to be the leader in the provision of an appropriate range of education and training programs for Aboriginal people that will be underpinned by our commitment to the preservation of the Aboriginal languages and cultures of Central Australia. Our aim is to assist Aboriginal people to achieve success in their career development and lifelong endeavours while valuing culture.

PROPOSITION
Aboriginal culture is an integral component of self and career development and learning and work environments.

OUR MISSION
To assist Aboriginal people in their self and career development through the provision of education and training programs, specialist language education resources and cultural materials and the preservation of Aboriginal histories and stories.

ABORIGINAL DEVELOPMENT

Assist in the preservation of Aboriginal languages and cultures

  • Aboriginal language dictionaries and other language education resources are published
  • Aboriginal histories, stories are documented, published where appropriate and preserved
  • A range of Cultural materials are displayed and preserved

  • Catalogue of material is established, maintained and promoted
  • Sales of published material increase
  • A program for ongoing development of resources is established

BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT

Continually improve business processes to sustain service provision

  • Human resource management practices compliment service principles and delivery
  • IAD has a range of income streams and is financially secure
  • Business processes are effective in supporting service provision
  • Governance and management systems reflect contemporary business standards

  • Number of training and development opportunities undertaken by staff
  • Income streams are defined and quantified
  • Operations at  full capacity
  • Registered Training Organisation (RTO) status is maintained
  • Consumer and staff satisfaction and public accountability is demonstrated

MARKETING AND PROMOTION

Promote the profile of IAD through proactive advertising and promotion of activities and services

  • Outcomes achieved by IAD are known in Central Australia, the NT and nationally
