Aboriginal Cultural Awareness Program
The
Aboriginal Cultural Awareness Program
(ACAP) is an opportunity for staff, students and the general public
(organizations, touring groups and individuals) to learn more about Aboriginal
cultures and lifestyles.
ACAP’s aims are to:
• share Aboriginal culture with non-Aboriginal people in order to improve
relationships in
Australian society generally;
• develop a better understanding and awareness of Aboriginal people and their
cultures;
• recognise the unique needs and aspirations of Aboriginal people;
• improve the working relationships between the non-Aboriginal service
providers and
Aboriginal staff and clientele.
Presented by Indigenous staff of IAD, the
program
includes the following activities and aims:
Altyerre/Tjukurrpa
Taking part in a creation-ancestor tour
and visiting creation sites around Mparntwe (Alice Springs).
Law & Land
Gaining an understanding of the law
associated with traditional land ownership and care.
Family
Learning about Aboriginal kinship, relationships,
culture, etiquette, sharing and caring, Aboriginal life and cultural survival.
History
Learning about Aboriginal history before
and after European settlement, and discussing current issues of racism,
discrimination, Aboriginal legislation and politics.
Culture Through Art
Listening to stories, understanding the
meanings of symbols and signs represented in art, and learning about the
significance of traditional song and dance in Aboriginal culture
Bush Foods & Hunting
Learning to identify, collect and prepare
bush tucker and learning about bush medicine.
