General Information
Student
Services
Student Services is one of
the most important areas for students attending IAD. The Student Services Office
can assist with a wide range of issues such as accommodation, child care,
access to transport and Abstudy allowances.
As well as assisting in
these areas the Student Services Officers offer counselling, financial advice,
academic and welfare assistance through a support network of Aboriginal
organisations and non-Aboriginal resource services such as Centrelink.
Any problems or
need for advice, either to do with studies or personal problems, Student
Services is here to assist.

Attendance
The general policy for
attendance is that students will attend on average 80% of course time. If
attendance falls below this, the enrolment will be reviewed by lecturer.
Prolonged unapproved leave will result in the suspension or cancellation of Abstudy.
Sorry
Business/Ceremonial Leave
Under certain circumstances,
absence due to family business can also be negotiated with the lecturer and
Student Services.
Sick Leave
A doctors certificate is
required after two continuous days of absence for health reasons (including
family sickness).

Abstudy
Most students attending IAD
are entitled to receive an Aboriginal Study Grant from Centrelink. The Abstudy
payment varies according to age, number of dependants and course taken.
Part-time students can receive Abstudy grants to cover the cost of their
materials and books.
Any Abstudy correspondence
response required can be assisted by Student Services Officer or the Abstudy Student Assistance Centre on 132317.
Counselling
Student Services are
available to students for counselling support and may access other organisations
from time to time for referral. There are several services in the community
which IAD invites to visit the students to explain what their counselling
services include and how to access these services. These include:

Transport
IAD provides transport for
those students who are unable to get to campus themselves. Three buses are used to
pick up and drop off students from town camps and the town area only. The buses
run in the morning and afternoon.
Should the bus service for pick
up and drop off be required, lecturers or Student Services need to be advised
your address.
Alcohol and
Other Drugs
IAD is an alcohol and drug
free zone. Alcohol and drugs are not permitted on the premises or in any IAD
vehicle. Any student under the influence of alcohol or other drugs will be
dismissed instantly.
Smoking
IAD abides by the Smoke free NT Legislation. Smoking
is permitted in designated areas only, which are identified on the
IAD campus map, which is available from Student Services or
Reception.
Students are expected to maintain appropriate behaviour while on campus,
as well as on
excursions or field trips.
Fighting, drunken behaviour or abuse of staff or other students is not acceptable.
Code of Conduct
Aboriginal cultural issues and sensitivities are
recognised, accepted and practised by the IAD board, management, employees and
students of the institute. It is expected that all persons should behave with acceptance and respect
for each other. In order to uphold our obligations to each other we must:
maintain and respect confidentialily both personal
and professional and focus on
professional issues rather than personal factors.
co-operate with each other and respect all colleagues in their positions or
employ or
study.
remember that we are here for the sole purpose of maximum operational
functions of
IAD and educational advancement of all students.
maintain a commitment to the vision & educational philosophy of IAD.
deliver the best service that we can offer with all due care and treat clients
in a fair and
equitable manner.
not interfere with or hinder the production and performance of the organisation
in general.
not use, damage, remove or destroy anything belonging to the organisation or
another
person.
not make improper use of inside information in order to gain or seek benefits
to the
advantage of
oneself or another person.
disclose and take reasonable steps to avoid any conflict of interest.
at all times behave and present an appropriate appearance that upholds Aboriginal
cultural values.
Discrimination
IAD is committed to having a harmonious and just
working environment for all employees and students. To support this end,
discrimination, harassment or prejudicial treatment of any form, on the basis of
race, religion, sexuality or disability will not be tolerated. Unacceptable behaviour includes:
failure to provide equality of opportunity in such things as employment,
access to facilities or the application of rules and policies;
racial vilification (including teasing, insults or other unwelcome comments);
sexual harassment (including teasing or other unwelcome comments, jokes,
uninvited displays of sexually explicit material, or unwelcome physical contact);
initiating violence (including any form or physical contact, aggression or
assault, regardless of alleged reasons for such threats of violence).
Should any employee or student of the IAD feel that
they have in any way been unlawfully discriminated against, a grievance

Student Representative Council
IAD has a Student Representative Council (SRC)
that meets once a term in order to discuss issues affecting students. This may
include: organising weekly student lunches, social events, concerns regarding
support services for students and other topics determined by the SRC.
Each course has at least two representatives and if students are unable to
attend meetings, the class should nominate a replacement.
Students take the responsibility for leading and
recording the minutes of the meetings.
Disputes & Grievances Policy
In the event of serious misconduct, breach of rules
and/or unresolved disputes between staff and students, or between students, the
IAD Disputes and Grievance Policy should be invoked. This process is outlined in
Clause 30 Disputes and Grievance Policy in the IADs certified agreement. A copy
of this policy can be found in your enrolment kit.
Assessment Appeal
Students have the right to appeal assessment grades.
If you are dissatisfied with a grade, you can ask the coordinator of the
Education and Training Unit to organise a review of the grade.
If you are not satisfied with the coordinators decision, the IAD Disputes and
Grievance Policy should be invoked.
Assessment Results
A copy of your course grades, graduation certificate
and/or academic transcript is available from Student Services free of charge.
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
Students will be given credit for a module/unit
where they can produce evidence of having attained the required competencies
that are listed in the learning outcomes. Usually these competencies can be
acquired through life experience and previous formal learning.
Students wishing to apply for RPL for any module/unit will be interviewed. For
more details about RPL ask your lecturer, Student Services officers or the
coordinator of the Education and Training Unit.
Withdrawal from Course
If you wish to withdraw from a course, module/unit,
you MUST inform the Coordinator of the Education and Training Unit or your
lecturer in writing within seven days of your last attendance. Verbal
notification is NOT acceptable.
Failure to notify could incur an over-payment from Abstudy, which you would be
obliged to repay.
Refund Policy
IAD has a Fee and Refund Policy. This policy is applied to all courses
delivered at IAD.
No fee is payable by Aboriginal students enrolling
in DEET- or DEST-funded courses delivered on an IAD campus or at a specific site
for which full course funding has been provided. In all other cases a fee is
payable.
Where applicable, a deposit of not less than 25% of the full fee can be
charged to secure course enrolment. The balance should be paid two (2) weeks
prior to course commencement.
Terms of payment for other courses attracting fees may be negotiated through
the Manager of the department providing the program.
Course enrolment fees will not be refunded where the student/attendee fails to
give five (5) working days notice of withdrawal from enrolment.
Students/attendees withdrawing from courses or failing to attend a course must
re-enrol & pay any fees applicable to that enrolment.
IAD reserves the right to cancel courses not meeting required student
numbers with notice of five (5) working days. Any fees paid in such
circumstances will be fully refund.
AQF Recognition
IAD recognizes
Australian Qualification Framework (AQF) qualifications and statements of
attainment issued by other RTOs.
