INSTITUTE FOR ABORIGINAL DEVELOPMENT

General Information

Student Services
Student Services is one of the most important areas for students attending IAD. The Student Services Office can assist with a wide range of issues such as accommodation, child care, access to transport and Abstudy allowances.

As well as assisting in these areas the Student Services Officers offer counselling, financial advice, academic and welfare assistance through a support network of Aboriginal organisations and non-Aboriginal resource services such as Centrelink.

Any problems or need for advice, either to do with studies or personal problems, Student Services is here to assist.

Sorry Business/Ceremonial Leave
Under certain circumstances, absence due to family business can also be negotiated with the lecturer and Student Services.

Sick Leave
A doctor’s certificate is required after two continuous days of absence for health reasons (including family sickness).

Should the bus service for pick up and drop off be required, lecturers or Student Services need to be advised your address.

Student Representative Council
IAD has a Student Representative Council (SRC) that meets once a term in order to discuss issues affecting students. This may include: organising weekly student lunches, social events, concerns regarding support services for students and other topics determined by the SRC.
Each course has at least two representatives and if students are unable to attend meetings, the class should nominate a replacement.

Students take the responsibility for leading and recording the minutes of the meetings.

Disputes & Grievances Policy
In the event of serious misconduct, breach of rules and/or unresolved disputes between staff and students, or between students, the IAD Disputes and Grievance Policy should be invoked. This process is outlined in Clause 30 Disputes and Grievance Policy in the IAD’s certified agreement. A copy of this policy can be found in your enrolment kit.

Assessment Appeal
Students have the right to appeal assessment grades. If you are dissatisfied with a grade, you can ask the coordinator of the Education and Training Unit to organise a review of the grade. If you are not satisfied with the coordinator’s decision, the IAD Disputes and Grievance Policy should be invoked.

Assessment Results
A copy of your course grades, graduation certificate and/or academic transcript is available from Student Services free of charge.

Students wishing to apply for RPL for any module/unit will be interviewed. For more details about RPL ask your lecturer, Student Services officers or the coordinator of the Education and Training Unit.
