Strong Culture, Strong People, Strong Future

Institute for Aboriginal Development (IAD) was founded in 1969 by the late Reverend Jim Downing and the late Yami Lester OAM, with support from the Uniting Church. From the very beginning, IAD’s mission has been to empower Aboriginal communities and build meaningful connections between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people through education and cultural exchange.

Today, IAD actively delivers language, cultural, and educational programs that inspire respect, celebrate heritage, and bring people together across Central Australia.

Since 1969, IAD has brought together different language groups to show the practical benefits of traditional knowledge through work experience, skills training and creative products.

IAD is committed to a ‘walking in two worlds’ approach to improve livelihoods for Aboriginal people.

Our mission is to embed Aboriginal languages and cultures in the life of Central Australia through educational programs and publications.
